It’s sad to see majestic birds that should be roaming free jailed for life in enclosures that are too small in bird parks and wildlife sanctuaries that are supposed to be caring for them.

In the wild Secretary Birds roam huge expanses of savanna grasslands feeding on insects, rodents and small animals. They are birds that need space. At the World of Birds near Cape Town there are two of them in an enclosure that is effectively a jail cell.  Although I was alone and quietly standing still they were obviously distressed by my being there. God knows what stress they are put under when a hoard of screaming kids enters the enclosure. Sadly they are destined to a life sentence in this jail. Instead of freedom in an enclosure of an reasonable size their only escape is to tramp the well worn circle round the adges of the pen.

I like birds, but I will not pay to return to the World of Birds again as they are exploiting their captives, not caring for them as they should be.
